Tell us about your background, your experience and how long you have been in the excavations business?
Joel from Earthwise Excavations: I have been running my own excavations business for about 8-years now. I started off my career in building and construction as an apprentice in Tasmania. Soon after qualifying a builder, I took over my father’s concreting business and that involved excavating groundworks when preparing concrete slabs, foundations and a lot of very steep driveways in Tasmania. Soon after, I bought my first excavator, a 5-tonne Kubota Excavator.
What made you and your wife move up here to the Sunshine Coast?
Joel from Earthwise Excavations: I enjoy surfing and the weather is definitely warmer here and we have really come to love the area and the people. I transferred my Builders licence here 2013, bought another excavator and also built a few houses. Excavating started as a part-time business but it has become my main focus now.
What type of excavator did I see on your website and what can it do?
Joel from Earthwise Excavations: That large one you saw is my 8-tonne Caterpillar and it can do almost anything, I love it haha. Since buying that digger, I’ve been using it to work on a lot of site preparation for new homes, cut and fill etc here on the Sunshine Coast, in particular, Buderim, Eumundi, Noosa, Maloolaba and Colandra. We do everything, from Swimming pool excavations, Rock Walls, Drilling piers/foundations, and general site works.
An 8-tonne machine – How do you move an excavator of that size from one site to the next?
Joel from Earthwise Excavations: We use a service provided by Sunshine Coast Tilt Trays and have found them very reliable and efficient.
It seems to have more attachments than a Swiss army knife, what are the main attachments that your excavator uses regularly?
Joel from Earthwise Excavations: Well apart from the different sized Digging Buckets, we also use a number of Augers (drills) and a Rock-Grab/Log-Grabbers.
Thanks for meeting with me Joel, all the best with your digging in the future and I know who to call if I ever move to the Sunshine Coast and need some earthworks or a swimming pool dug.
Joel from Earthwise Excavations: Haha, yeah well it is a nice place to live here, and even better when you have a pool.
